Don't know if this helps, but here's a couple of pictures of my coil installed. It's been so long, I don't remember what I did with the ground wires.

You might consider MaxBMW outside Danbury CT. If they don't have the expertise, maybe they have some ideas to pass along.

I thought 1981 was the transitional year when they moved towards the electronic ignition. Unless it was different for the R65.

I'm not certain this would work on a magneto setup...works on a standard coil setup. I would next try pulling a spark plug and keep it in the cap. Put it so that the threads touch the fins. Turn the engine by hand or using the rear wheel while in gear. Watch for spark around the S-mark. If nothing, ...

What sort of headlight bulb are you currently running? I recall reading...I think it was an MOA article...someone tried to upgrade the headlight on his /7. It was an LED setup but it required some kind of fan/heatsink and it was difficult to find in the headlight shell. I'm running a Sylvania haloge...

Are there differences in layout for the lever switches versus the swivel switches?
