Re: Got my battery covers painted…

Boy Scouts and taking typing class with the girls in high school have served me well over the years!!

Re: Got my battery covers painted…

I have never used the o-ring system but instead have a piece of string that holds the two side together. I used my Boy Scout skills and used a tautline knot which has worked for many years! For the right side cover, I didn't see the need to drill any holes. I ended up using a small size zip tie arou...

Re: Should my charge light be on at idle?

If the light only shows when you put the key in and begin to kick, but goes out as soon as the bike is started, that's a good thing! You generator is charging the battery and providing excess power to the system. I would not keep lowering the idle just to have the light come on. You have a good situ...

Thank you. So are you saying the charge light should be ON at idle?
It can be. But doesn't have to be. Just depends on how you've set the idle. I don't like it too low...want to keep the oiling going on at lower RPMs.

Re: Should my charge light be on at idle?

Sounds normal to me. Typically the generator doesn't develop enough to be able to power things at idle and the battery has to pick up the slack. As long as the gen light goes out with added throttle, sounds fine.

Re: Well… that stupid side stand got me yesterday

One issue I could see with the bolt is that it pushes the bike to a more upright position. There's the potential for the bike to push over to the other side. Especially if you don't use inch-sized tires. For a while I was running metric tires which are smaller in radius than the stock tires. That me...

Re: Importing a bike to California

The big EPA changes to the /7 occurred on/about Jan 1, 1978, so I would think that a 1977 model would be OK with what it was designed for.

Re: 1959 BMW R50 Top Speed

OK, I just didn't understand what you meant that at 60 the RPMs sound OK but above 60 it's running faster than you like. As far as I know, once in 4th gear, the ratio of speed and RPM is direct so faster speeds mean faster RPMs. It is what it is.

Re: 1959 BMW R50 Top Speed

Sounds like you're suggesting that when you get to higher speeds, the engine sound goes up and up but the speed doesn't seem to keep up with the sound. Is that what you're saying? If so, maybe the clutch is misadjusted or slipping?
