Re: Very hard to start r60/2

If the engine was completely rebuilt is it possible the cam is off a tooth? I had that issue with a car engine.

Re: restoration advice for newbie

A few comments from my recent experience completing an R26: Re-lacing the wheels is not that difficult. If you can rebuild your engine or transmission you should not have problems with the wheels using guidance from the Barrington book. Powder Coating, like painting, is all about the metal prep, If ...

Re: OLD MAN SLINGER RANT!!

In 1974 before I drove my 1966 R60 across Canada, Karl's BMW in Minneapolis suggested I get the slinger cleaned on the bike with about 25K miles. At that time I had little money and no idea what the mechanic was talking about and drove the bike across Canada to Vancouver and back through the US. I s...

Re: restoration advice for newbie

Ray, congratulations on deciding to take on your project! I have just completed a nut and bolt restoration of my R26 and every day it gives me joy because I know the story of every piece and the work I did was done well and what I sent out was also done well. As was mentioned, the key is using the B...

Re: R27 Cold Start Nightmare

I just finished a 1+ year nut and bolt restoration of my 1956 R26 and when doing the initial startup a few weeks ago had a similar problem with difficulty starting and gas occasionally flooding out of the tickler. I had sent the carb to Bing for rebuilding so was puzzled at why the float was not sea...

Re: R26 Loose Brake Pedal

I was able to fix for the loose brake pedal and it should last another 50 years! I found a sintered bronze bushing on Amazon (came in a box of 5) and it is made in the US!. This bushing was the closest size for the worn ID of the brake pedal and the worn OD of the frame peg. I used adjustable hand r...

Re: R26 Loose Brake Pedal

Thank for the reply and the suggestions. I am going to look for a thin bushing as close as possible to the pedal and spindle sizes and use an adjustable hand reamer to fit the bushing. When finished I will post a pictures of the parts and the results.

R26 Loose Brake Pedal

On my R26 the rear brake pedal is worn and fits loosely on the shaft which is part of the frame. I don't see any replaceable bushing but can shim it up on the sides with washers so it works and feels ok. If you have machining tools you could make a custom bushing to fit in the brake pedal, but was w...

Re: Fuel

I found a location in Phoenix AZ selling the Sunoco Optima. It only comes in a 5 gallon metal container with a short spout for $95 and an optional long flexible screw on spout for an additional $10. The dealer said they advertise 3 year usage but it is probably closer to 5 years. I purchased it for ...

Re: What is correct horn for R26?

I have finally gotten around to restoring the horn and am amazed at the pristine condition! After all these years it never leaked and the gasket is intact! And look at the engineering and quality of the parts. Amazing. All the screws had not been disturbed. I will carefully clean and paint it.
