It seems normal to me as I have experienced with my first plunger but it rides smoothly without any problem.

In my opinion, it is the model of the bike as some bikes take quickest to warm up the engine than the others do. Have you checked the conditions of your carb?

A full-face helmet is the safest type of helmet. Since you ride only for short trips. you should check the legal laws of an approved helmet in your area. If I were in your place, I would care about wearing a DOT-approved helmet.
