Re: Restoring #163

Thanks Eric! I hope to see the bike in person someday if BMW North America brings it out for display. Perhaps next year for the 100th Anniversary celebrations.

Re: Restoring #163

Eric, yes I think that’s a good idea - I will. Sorry if I got too far off topic answering a question to my question. We’re all learning a lot here though🙂 From the background story that your father told me, and checking specific details of the build, I am about 95% certain that I have the Fisher bik...

Re: Restoring #163

Here is a view of the magazine cover. April 1976. I have an old Butler & Smith R90S racer, and have been following Eric’s story about #163, looking for clues about mine. I’m still not certain of its exact history, and Covid has kept me from getting it in front of Eric’s father Udo for a closer look....

Re: Restoring #163

Chuck - I know that you were there racing that first year in Daytona too - Laverda, wasn’t it? Does this this reddish ring hanging around the frame have something to do with the Tech Inspection done on the bikes?

Re: Restoring #163

Hi Chuck, yes it is counterintuitive, but it works! I saw a similar setup on an NSU racer once. I’m not sure how long they used the setup, but they did use it in the very first race. Here is the April 1976 issue of Das Motorrad, which had an article about the Daytona race the month before. You can s...

Re: Restoring #163

Thanks for the photos of the original top motor mount. Mine are definitely replacements. Race bikes are always a snapshot in time! I was finally able to find a clear photograph of the clutch cable/throwout I asked about earlier. When you have time, can you see if you have any photos of how the throw...

Re: Restoring #163

Eric, do you have any close up photos or other details of the 2 top engine mounting brackets that were added to the B&S racers, and how they attach to the 4 studs that were added to the top of the engine (last two photos)? Also, I’ve seen two versions - what looks like a solid one on the restored 16...

Re: 1972 R75/5 racer mod ,

I don’t know if you’ve done any work on the frame yet, but I have an R75 frame that was raced by R&K BMW here in NJ during the 1970s. It’s pretty heavily braced and modified. I too had toyed around with the idea of building a race/street bike with this one, but I got two race frames from that closed...

Re: TZ750 style Rob North frame

Is this Paul? I ran across the article about your bike on Phil Hall's web page about two years ago. Great story! I had tried to get your contact info from Phil, but nothing seemed to be working on his page to reach him via email. So are you still racing at all, or have you retuned it again for stree...
