Re: Very hard to start r60/2

Check to see if the idle jets are clogged.

I chased what I thought was coil/electrical and one of the idle jets was completely clogged. Make sure a fine wire can go through, seeing light through isn’t always reliable indication of the jet being clear.

Re: 1984 R80 seat, on a 1983 R100

Are they both twin-shock bikes? The twin shock seats were relatively flat and the round rear cowl and seat are a unit. If that’s the case, they should fit. There are hinges on the right side of the seat and a pin that goes into the lock on the frame on the left side. A 1985 and up monolever R80RT or...

No, you don’t need to file the hex edges, only if there are burrs or it doesn’t rotate freely in the barrel.

Re: restoration advice for newbie

Remember that BMW stands for “Bring More Wallet”. Seriously, what are your intentions with the bike? 100 miles a year or a 2500 mile summer tour every year? To me those intentions determine the level of both mechanical and cosmetic work. I personally would not powdercoat the frame. Too many stories ...

Re: 1983 R100 clutch cable

Late reply on this. BMW changed cable suppliers in the early 2000s. The new vendor introduced the hexagonal die. This has been written in other forums in the past, some of those were slightly oversized or had a burr and did not rotate freely in the “barrel”. That binding caused premature breakage of...

Re: Ignition / Starting Issue

So at the VR D+ to the brush? Maybe make up a jumper to eliminate a pinched wire, the conductor may be broken, or see if it’s high resistance?

Re: Ignition / Starting Issue

Well. Since the VR and starter relay are changed, those should be eliminated. Looking at the wiring, the horn and the charging system are powered off the same fuse. Since the horn switch is on that circuit, there could be something there. Or disconnect the ground for the horn and see if that changes...

Re: Ignition / Starting Issue

I poked around this morning and remebered Snowbum discussion /5 starting issues. Sounds like your problem. Entire article here: https://bmwmotorcycletech.info/slash5cricket.htm Extract: “The /5 motorcycles have another peculiarity, that is part of the circuitry that is described in the below article...
