Re: 2024 on an R27

I went down yesterday, not bad at all but still scary. It was carrying too much speed into a tight right at the end of a long straight, with just enough gravel to throw me off. I braked hard but didn’t slow enough, and decided to go straight into the grass rather than risk a low-side slide. The grou...

Re: 2024 on an R27

Do you use a Sigma type speedo for Motogiro routes? Hi Frank, hope to see you there, too. It's a highlight of the year for me! For the Motogiro I use a cheap bicycle speedometer/odometer that uses GPS, link below. It doesn’t do any navigation, just speed and distance. My R27 has an accurate trip me...

Re: 2024 on an R27

Lots of great rides now that the weather is compliant. I’ve ridden to work more than driven for the past two weeks, and last Friday I had an exceptional 200 mile loop for lunch. There’s a MotoGiro next month in the Poconos, and I’ve decided to ride the bike there. 450 miles each way, plus about 300 ...

Re: 2024 on an R27

I entered the annual BMW MOA mileage contest which started today, just to get my little single listed alongside all the 1200+cc bikes in next year’s magazine. Last year there were six or eight Airheads, but only a few from the ‘70s and nothing earlier. Entry.jpg On the way to work this morning (and ...

Re: Trip Meter won't reset

The real question is "is it accurate?" The standard R27 I think is a 1.74. My speedo and odometer are surprisingly accurate, they differ from a GPS log by maybe a quarter-mile over 100+ mile trips. The trip meter is a great fuel gauge. Definitely clockwise on the turn, I just checked. The ...

Re: Trip Meter won't reset

I'm pretty sure that's not the original speedometer, it should only go to 90 on an R27. My '64-built R27 has a trip meter. They can be rebuilt, I'm not sure how much they are used. Mine was in pretty sad shape and inop when I got the bike, for about $300 including shipping it looks and works like ne...

Not a Klaxon, but rebuilding of a Bosch horn was written in the Fall 2010 issue of the Vintage BMW Bulletin.
Thanks for that reference! I have 'fix old Bosch horn' on my list, this is great.

Re: 2024 on an R27

I commuted to work twice this week, and had a nice 145 mile ride in today’s perfect weather. The route brought me by a state forest with a rough but ride-able dirt loop. PXL_20240316_195356096.jpg The bike continues to run great, I even jumped on I-95 for a few miles and topped out around 72 mph on ...

Re: 2024 on an R27

I rode to work yesterday. It’s only about 20 miles round trip, and not a scenic ride, but a good way to inject some fun into the mundane. It’s about half in-town, half slowish four lane. 1-Parking.jpg The R27 has essentially no storage, minus the small parcel rack, so last year I splurged on an Aero...

2024 on an R27

This October my R27 will turn 60. To celebrate, I’ve resolved to ride more, and decided to document it here in case there's any archive or entertainment value. A quick recap, I found my bike in 2020. It had sat for about 40 years and looked rough, but by late 2021 it was sorted and running well. I r...
