Re: Engine numbers on an R65?

Kurt- I have 2 from 1983 and 1 from 1981, the first year of production. The LS models are defined by their distinctive Hans Muth designed small front fairing and rear tail section with integrated grab handles, as well as unique cast wheels, double discs up front, etc. Unique little bikes for sure. I...

Re: Engine numbers on an R65?

I'm a little late to the discussion, but for what it's worth, I have 3 R65LS's in the shop right now, and all have VIN numbers stamped on the case above the dipstick.

Looks like a sweet bike you got!

Re: Timing Issue R 75/5; R 60/7

cbclemmens- I suppose it goes without saying that while you chase your timing issue, you have already checked/set valve clearances (maybe even re-torqued the heads), know that your air filters are good, have synched the carbs/set idle, checked your plugs and plug gaps, etc. As I'm sure you know, hav...

Re: strip to bare metal?

I've posted about this before, but if you decide to have a commercial shop do the work, make sure they do a lot of car and bike work. Not every sandblaster or powder coater understands or is careful with things like bearing mounting surfaces or threads. If doing the work at home, it begs the questio...

Re: Do I need a new starter?

It's also worth noting that the Euro Motoelectrics model is almost 6lbs (!!) lighter than the stock Bosch starter. In addition to being lighter, it has (an advertised) 70-140% more cranking torque, and a 20% lower amperage draw. All wins in my book. I just purchased one for my /2 conversion project,...

Re: R50/2 steering damper parts length question...

Gentlemen! Thank you all. It would indeed seem that the previous owner had used an adjusting screw from either an S or US model. The difference of 9mm/.354" seems about right. I will call Vech tomorrow and see if he has a 245mm one available (although I imagine it will be an expensive part....)...

R50/2 steering damper parts length question...

Hi All- I'm in the process of mocking up a 1965 R50/2 (it's actually a conversion project with a 1974 R75/6 engine), and had a question on part length for the steering damper adjustment knob (friction type). When the rod is placed down through the steering stem, it barely catches 2 or 3 threads of t...

Re: Crusty Master cylinder

Armand- There is another recent thread on this topic: https://vintagebmw.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=16667 Upgrading my 1979 R80/7 to a handlebar mounted MC was one of the single best upgrades I have done for that bike. Braking performance is massively improved. I highly recommend the conversi...
