Re: Greetings from a Vintage Guy

Wow! Great post. Thanks for sharing. Your gearbox mod is excellent reading.

I assume you didn’t recalculate the end play/shims in the gearbox after your last service but it sounds like it’s still working great. Very interesting.

Re: changing manual trasmission fluid

I’d use Gl4 85/90 assuming you’ve got helical gears in that box. Not GL5!

Re: R51/2 - rocket arm washer

Wow that end play looks massive. I don’t know if there’s a spec but you want very little play. I just like to see slight oil squish with I pull up/down but zero click if that makes sense. I don’t have a 51/2 but if you loosen your rocker bolts you should be able to tighten that up with a clamp and a...

Re: How to contact Cycle Werks.

My latest batch of gearbox tools are pretty poorly made. None of the holes perfectly line up and all need to be somewhat widened to use. It seems his quality is really slipping. I’ve ordered a few alternate tools from Salis recently and the quality is night and day. If only Salis had all the tools i...

Re: R60/2 best place to source a centrifugal advance unit

My experience is that every bike I’ve seen with “differential timing” sending its owner into fits of anxiety and fear shows a few mere degrees at most. If your bike is off by a mile then of course it should be addressed but I’ve never seen more than 3 or 4 degrees. I can’t imagine how an advance lob...

Re: R60/2 best place to source a centrifugal advance unit

I think this whole differential timing mumbo jumbo is for the most part, a great big nothing burger.

Perhaps you only inadvertently reversed the polarity of the regulator.

Re: Speedo/Horn Rebuild

The horns I’m working on are the French made Klaxon variety indicative of the /2 era.

Should these sound on the bench when connected to a 6v battery or am I missing something? Does the center rear stud need to be grounded as well?

Speedo/Horn Rebuild

Anyone ever take a stab at rebuilding these themselves? I’ve torn a non-op horn down, cleaned it up internally and familiarized myself with the design and how it all goes together but I can’t say that I’ve effectively “fixed” one yet. Before I did anything I hooked it up to a 6v battery with a coupl...

Rotting rubber woes…

A few years ago a found a nice survivor R80GS that had been parked for 7-8 years and decided to bring it home and resurrect it. I went through and resealed everything, rebuilt much of it and generally fell in love with the bike. I completed the work about two years ago mounted a fresh set of Metzele...
