Tape?

It sounds like the circuit board in the top of the headlight shell is moving around...it shouldn't. There are 4 tabs on each corner of the circuit board...maybe one of them is bent the wrong way or is not holding the board firmly. Bending the tabs too much can break them off, so be careful.

You might try some tape to see if you can hold the key at just the right position. I wouldn't use duct tape as that might pull paint off, but maybe something like the blue painter's tape.

I think Kurt's diagnosis is

I think Kurt's diagnosis is correct.

Another idea might be to try to lenghten the key a bit with a layer (or 2 or 3) of tape just at the tip.

Good luck!

It did it again.

After a very short ride Zenaida is back in the trailer. We already have a mechanic waiting in Alpine. Try to connect it directly, but found the black/ blue cable burned a little. Didn't want to hold the group trouble shooting.
I'll reprort letter on.

You're making a trip I made,

You're making a trip I made, but in the other direction, a few years back. I went with some friends from Deming, NM out to Fort Davis, TX, down to Big Bend, and then up to Vanderpool and on to Llano for BBQ, before coming back to NM. It was a great trip, I hope you're enjoying yours, even if you do have to do it on 4 wheels!

Thanks Darryl

Hopefully by tomorrow I'll have Zenada up and ready.

Since I have some extra time I took some pictures.

Langtry icecrem shop was closed.

Judge Roy Bean court house is a must visit.
We stop at the Langtry store for gas and the promissed ice cream.

The owner of the store told us "watch your ice cream" this is the reason, his dog loves ice cream and takes it out of the customers.

BSR morning workout and great assistance, thanks to all!

Our morning rutine starts with an early workout.
BSR morning workout

We had breakfast in Alpine, Buster came along.

After breakfast we took care of Zenaida.

We spent three hours trouble shooting the electrical system at chris King's shop in Alpine.

Everybody helped. There are 100's of years of experience among this great people.

We used four different voltmeters, sometimes we got 0 volts, sometimes 3 or 6.

The problem was not in the bucket, it was a bad battery and a bad connection "30" between the battery and somewhere along the harness.

In the process we replaced a bad condensor.

We bypassed the ignition switch at the bucket and wire a cable directly from the battery to the front.

McDonald Observatory and Balmorhea

Zenaida has smoke comming out of the breather, low compression and a broken bucket support, but we made it all the way to the McDonald Observatory.
We had lunch at Fort Davis before.

After lunch we start the climb to the observatory for The Annual Roll Down Competition.
We roll, with the engines turn off, down the mountain to a near by road, who ever glides the farthest wins.

The winner ceremony

The bikes at Balmorhea.
Is there a magic solution to increase compression?

Zenaida is done!

I'm sad to report the on my way back to Fort Davis I lost 3rd gear.
Some few miles latter I lost power, coudn't go pass 35 mph.
Zenaida is done for good, there is no point in continue riding so slow, so we put Zenaida back on the trailer.

The M20 BSA clutch got stuck

We trailered Zenaida and the M20 to Chris shop to fix the clutch.

Chris and Buster guided as back to Alpine. Buster is riding in the side car.

The clutch was disassembled

and put back toghether.

There is a triple cover installation process involved.

Goodbye To Zenaida

Zenaida will stay in Chris shop in Alpine, there is no point in towing her for the next week. Chis will fix and take care of her.

Thanks to everybody for following my posts.

I'm back in the BSR!

I was asked: Do you want to borrow Chris R60US?

YES!

The original plan was for me and my wife to share her bike in case Zenaida failed. Not any more, she changed her mind, she is having a blast. Thanks to Chris and to Allan for this kind offer.

R60US

I'm impressed with how smooth the R60US is. This is my first time on a 60's BMW.
The torque is out of this world. It needs a little getting use to the telescopic forks, I feel I'm flying over the light bucket every time I brake. But it is so much easier to turn then my Earl's forks.
I'm still perfecting the cold and warm starting procedures.

Is a beautiful night in the Chisos Basin!

Perfect for working on the bikes, everybody but me and my wife. The R60US needs no chain adjustment for one, and I could go on and on, but I don't want to be rude to my hosts.

The R60US will get gas, check the oil level, tires and that is it!

Saludos

Arturo

The Big Bend ride

I have a passion for the 1960's R BMW's, specially the R50.
After this trip, my wife interest is on the British rigid frame bikes and she will start looking for one.

The group of the 15th BSR.

It was hot in the Big Bend, 98F! Perfect for a cold watermelon.

As soon as we got to Marathon I took the R60US back to Alpine. There was no traffic, just me and the twin. 62 Mph seems to be the perfect speed for this altitude.

Safe and sound at Chris' shop. He modify BMWs for serious off road riding.

In preparation for this year trip, we opened the engine and ....

Chris King in Alpine  removed the head and cylinder from my R26 last Fri.The two top compression rings broken all to hell.Top one in at least a dozen pieces.Cylinder wall look good enough. It has not been bored.Piston looks good as well but is a sloppy fit in bore. Wrist pin bushing loose in the rod. Rod feels tight and looks clean as well as the inside of the case. There are missing some of the pieces of piston rings so will have to find them when I get the front cover and pan off.

Oil control ring was at .016 which is WAY too much end gap. Gap was also not parallel. Don't know what caused the ring breakage but suspect one of the follwing. Broken on installation, too tight a ring gap or excesive ring groove clearance.

I'll have to clean everything up and measure. I also suspect the valve rockers are not oiling as they should as there was very little oil up top and there are some home made ground grooves in two of the head bolts to improve oil flow to the rockers. Suspect worn oil pump as reason.

Any suggestion and or recomendations?

Thanks

wow, what a long post only 2

wow, what a long post
only 2 things i would comment on
ur compression sounds way low to me as in time to rebuild

as for inflating tires...i have been carrying a co2 inflator for yrs now - $10 or so for the inflator & the cylinders r cheap
3 or 4 will inflate a big harley tire nicely ... small, easy, cheap & effective
good luck & enjoy the ride...u should have plenty of time to look around lol

It was a long trip

Butch, it was a long 7 days and eventful trip.
Yes the engine needed and was rebuild twice, according to my checkbook. The first mechanic didn´t do the job I payed for.
I´ll look into the Co2 inflator, thanks

My first Basset would ride in

My first Basset would ride in a sidehack, subsequent ones are not interested. The last one would ride on the rack of a ATV just fine, or in a sleigh behind the snowmobile. Ernie, our current one will only ride in the sleigh held down, tightly, all he wants to do is jump out.

Looks like a fun trip,

Icarus

Sorry for your loss! There

Sorry for your loss! There is just something about goofy Bassets that make people smile! Ernie is best friends with everyone, man or dog alike! We don’t pin his ears up when he eats, we just let him snack on his ears throughout the rest of the day! RIP Buster.
