I'm recuperating from putting on yet another Tech Day at my house in Santa Cruz. The weather cooperated, it was over 70F and sunny yesterday. You can see that over 50 people RSVPed at my website. And more than that showed up!

My friend and BBQ guru, Don Cameron rode here from his home in Deming, NM, to help me with the event, as he has done for about the last 5 or 6 years. Don puts on a huge BBQ event at his house called the Deming Gathering, on Veterans Day weekend. This fall will be the 15th and last edition, so don't hesitate to come out and eat some really great smoked beef. About a decade ago I apprenticed myself to Don, so I could learn the arcane arts of smoking meat. This year, I bought 20 lbs. of chicken and 35 lbs. of spare ribs, and we smoked them in batches on my little cooker over three days. On Saturday morning, Don filled my oven and set it to 250F, to warm everything. It was very leisurely, and nobody had to stay up overnight to make it happen.

I didn't have the chance to take any photos myself, but I'm hoping to get some more shots from other participants. In the meantime, here are a few pictures from Marco Hyman. Quite a bit of work actually went on. Quite a bit of talking and eating, too. All of the ribs and chicken disappeared. By about 5pm the last bike had left

Thanks for putting on a great

Thanks for putting on a great gathering. Great bikes and great people. Duane was giving us all some lessons on these old bikes.

Next year I hope to bring up my R51/3 if I can get it together and running. That may be a tall order given its current state (sitting in about 10 boxes), but now I have some additional motivation.

Thanks for putting on a great event! It was my first & hopefully not my last. I met a few guys & saw a bunch of beautiful bikes.

John.

It really is my pleasure!

Although it is a fair amount of work, it's also a lot of fun. The amazing bikes that show up are great to look at and many people I only see occasionally come by. There's a lot of interesting information (and not a few whoppers) that get passed around, too. And in 11 years, every bike that rode in under its own power, rode out again at the end of the day. In fact, one bike this year made the last few miles here in the back of my pickup, but went home again on two wheels.

Next year we'll do it again!
