Can anyone shed any light on this engine , it's origin, rarity and possible value ? It has the eagle stamp and BMW faintly cast into the cylinders.

Are you sure there is a BMW stamp and not a BVM? Im sure its not a BMW engine, but...... I've been wrong before.

I really don't have a clue. BMW did build a stationary boxer engine in WWII to use as a starter for their jet engines. But this engine is clearly a sidevalve 4 stroke, and I'm almost sure I recall that the starter motor was a 2 stroke.
