I acquired a R60US with what I think is a 1950's R60 engine based on the #'s. I have it running with a grounded magneto, and I'd like to test the generator. The wiring is a mess, a real mess.

How can I tell if I'm getting juice out of the generator? Is there a way to test the generator before the voltage regulator? Then test after the voltage regulator? I tried starting the bike, reving it up to a RPM that my /3 illuminates lights at. Testing for voltage at the 3 red wires in the image below showed no voltage. The red wires themselves maybe shorted. I'm guessing the black wire is supposed to be the brown ground.

Would love some help with this. Looked around and most questions are about bikes with wiring harnesses in tact. The only markings I see are Germany L60/6/1500/ Many Thanks.

how to test a /2 generator

I take it that there's no charging voltage at the battery when you rev the engine.

Here's a picture of the wiring on my R69S generator before I took things apart:

Maybe that might help some. But what will really help if you look this manual over. It should give you some good tips on how to service the generator.

Micha -

It would appear to be so. In the pdf file, schematic #1 is very similar to the diagram given in Roland Slabon's book "How to Restore your BMW Motorcycle, Twins 1950-1969". This diagram in Roland's book is listed for R51/3, R67, R67/2, R68 ('51-54). Roland also has a schemtic for the R50/2-R69S which is essentially the same as schematic #2 in the pdf file.

So I would say the pdf file is a good source for your bike.
