when did these items change?

top shows a later one with square shouldered shocks, the extra fender stay, and is clearance'd for a S engine cover

bottom shows a very early, 1955 I think, earls with rounded shouldered shocks, early pattern wheel hub, low shoulder alloy rim, and fender sans the extra riveted on stay

are these two pix coming up for anyone?

The damper with no alloy part to it, that is the bottom one in the pic is from R50S

My '69 R69S has the damper mechanism shown on the bottom PLUS the alloy looking piece which bolts to the backbone underneath the tank. Looks like to me that there's no difference in the two sets of parts. The one at the top just seems to be missing a few pieces - like the chrome collar below the handle and the large plate with the two holes on the opposite end of the rod.

I am not sure the pix clearly show the differences in the two forged (I think so anyhow) pieces, the pieces to which the steering head end of the shock anchors .......

but if they were forged, they did not come from the same die

I've not taken the calipers to them yet but it is looking like there are also subtle differences in some of the other pieces too

maybe they are the same for all practical purposes although it's almost impossible for me to imagine that 5 years later BMW didn't change the pieces

since they sure seemed to change things often while in a production run and maybe even on a whim taking no more than a week's notice
