National Motorcycle Racing Series returns to New Mexico Sept. 22 – 24, 2006

Albuquerque, NM- August 9, 2006- The Forth Annual AHRMA (American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association) Sandia Classic vintage race weekend is slated for September 22nd through 24th, 2006 in Albuquerque. Motorcycle racers from across the nation will convene for 2 days of intense action. Vintage roadracing will be featured with the Battle of the Legends®, as well as the ever popular bike shows, swap meet, vendors and trials exhibition. Race bikes of the 50's through the 80's including BSA, Bultaco, Husquavarna, Triumph, Norton, Matchless, Honda, and BMW will compete along with hand-shifting 1930’s and 40’s Harley-Davidson and Indian racers. Vintage motocross, dirt track and modern supermoto races will complete the largest competitive motorcycling event in New Mexico. Admission is $10/ day with children 12 and under free.

The 2006 Sandia Classic motorcycle races are bigger and better than ever with the addition of national points races for vintage and post-vintage motocross and vintage dirt track. A Supermoto cash purse race will also be featured running on a part dirt, part paved track. Modern racers will compete in the Sounds of Singles and Battle of Twins events. In the Battle of the Twins, fans will see newer race bikes from Aprilla, Ducati and Harley Davidson. A new rider roadracing school is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 22nd. Over 400 Nationally ranked racers are expected to participate in this year's 2 day event.

The Sandia Classic offers a rare opportunity to see legends compete on historic race motorcycles. Jay Springsteen, 3-time AMA Grand National Champion, returns on his Harley XR750 TT and will be challenged by 2-time AMA Grand National Champion Gary Nixon on a Rob North framed Triumph T150 Triple in the Battle of the Legends®. Motocross fans can enjoy the sights and sounds of vintage racing in 125, 250 and 500cc classes on the new Sandia Motocross Park track, adjacent to the Sandia Motor Speedway. Both tracks are located 4 miles west of I-40 exit 149, off of the south frontage road. The $10 daily ticket includes admission to road racing, motocross, pits, swap meet and bike shows. Roadracing, Trials, Cross Country and Motocross events will be held Saturday, Sept. 23 and Sunday, Sept. 24.

Dirt track racing will be held under the lights, Friday night at the Harvey Caplin Memorial Speedway. Gates will open at 6pm with racing at 8. Admission is only $5 for a full round of dirt track wheel to wheel action. The Caplin dirt track is located east of I-25, near the Rio Bravo exit. Spectators should take Rio Bravo south to Bobby Foster Road east over I – 25 and turn left at the T intersection, Los Picaros Rd. Look for the signs showing the way. There will be a food vendor at the track.

The Swap Meet continues to grow with deals being offered on both European and Japanese bikes and parts. Fifteen X 15 foot Swap Meet Vendor space is available for $35/1, $65/2, $95/3 and $125/4. Setup is Friday, 9/22, from 12-5pm. See the website for a swap meet vendor form.

For $5, attendees can enter their classic in the Saturday Bike Show. Classes include: Vintage American, Vintage British, Vintage Italian, Vintage German, Vintage Japanese, Vintage Scooters and Orphans, Cafe/Modified and Competition. There will also be a Best in Show and Peoples Choice awards. Bike Show entry is from 9 – Noon, with awards at 3pm.
