Lights

After much frustration yesterday with Tommy’s help, we were able to get the taillights on the bike and the bags to work using Tommy’s design. The taillights on the bags were too dim for my liking. Tommy suggested wiring 2 resistors in parallel which helped considerably but were still dimmer than I preferred. I wired in a third resistor in parallel and the result is shown in the photos. One with just the taillights and the other with the brake applied. The voltage reading for the taillights alone is 4.09 volts with 3 56 ohm resistors in parallel. Someone smarter than me could figure out the resistance required to achieve the result with a single resistor
There isn’t a lot of choice in 6 volt LED bulbs but Tommy’s design allows you to get brake and taillights with 1156 LED bulbs without changing the bulb socket to accept 1157 bulbs.

6 volt 1156 led light original enduro socket dual function

the pic look great !!
the value of a single resistor should be about 20 ohms

The sum of the currents through each path is equal to the total current that flows from the source. You can find total resistance in a Parallel circuit with the following formula: 1/Rt = 1/R1 + 1/R2 + 1/R3 +... I
56 ohms /3= 18.6 ohms

Not too bad $2.65 for 10 resistors and what you paid for 2 6 volt 1156 led bulbs and now you still have 7 left
no need to modify the original enduro socket and only using 1 signal wire plus ground

Tommy

Yikes. Almost makes me feel good about what I paid for mine. I think Tommy is right about those bags. In looking at the pictures, they do appear to have been used. The seller may have the original boxes, but it looks like the bags were installed at some point.

It's really pretty simple providing you don't screw up like me and leave an incandescent bulb in the system. Even with the 3 resistors wired in, it all fits into the taillight bucket so nothing is visible. If you just get the 20ohm resistor, it will be even simpler. Good luck.

Barry
can you measure the resistance of the 3 resistors in parallel
I think it would be about 20 ohms
Skychs
If you use the bulb that Barry ordered then a 20 ohm resistor would give you the same results
If you use a different bulb the resistance may be different
But if you order a 10 pack of 20 ohm resistors then it would be easy to add or subtract that value to a lower or higher value to make the bulb work like Barrys 6 volt application
https://www.ebay.com/itm/163522641295?ViewItem=&item=163522641295

Yea crazy $2700 on the bags
I paid 1200 for my r69us
500 for my R51
800 for my R50
0 for my r27
Total 2500

Thats less than that happy bidder paid for those bags !!
I think I got a better deal

Tommy

You’re spot on Tommy.

You’re spot on Tommy. Resistance across 3 resistors is 19 - 20 ohms.

Upgrade with blinkers

Thanks Barry
Chuck should have a easy conversion as he already has his tail light wired for the brake light circuit
Almost plug and play install new Led in his bags and add 1 resistor in the tailight

This is what I have done to mine as I added blinkers also
I will post socket modification and add the wiring diagram already posted early

Terrific setup!

Your lights are very effective. Imagine the difference between what you have now and what these bikes had when they were new!

Wow .... thanks for the video. Now I need LED's in my Hella turn signals. Is it ever going to end !?!?!?!?!? Smile.

Does that mean I will need a new blinker relay?

FL54 wrote:

Looks like a good candidate for the led upgrade
I know we can make it a little better
IMO
But shouldn't as it would take away from the original pantina with the space age flashlight
Maybe up grade the flashlight bulb and don't tell anyone

Blinker relay

Not if you keep the incandescent bulbs in the Hella handlebars blinkers
If you also update the front blinkers to leds you will then need a blinker made to work with the low current led's
I have a good source for one that I used
Will post on enduro 1157 socket upgrade later today
PS
You could be the 1st one in your neighborhood/state with this upgrade

For the amount of time the barend signal lights are on, I don’t personally think changing the bulbs to LED make much sense. Just changing the headlight and taillight drops the current load so much that muy ‘68 charges nicely.

Bar-end LEDs

There are LED festoon lights that should be much brighter than the original incandescents. It's not just the current drop that's attractive about them.

Good point Icarus and Jon
Not to much to gain current wise as you said they are only on for a short amount of time and are intermittent
But a good led will be brighter

They are better
But if the other driver is on the phone, texting or distracted a strobe light wouldn't make a difference
Bought mine on ebay from China and dont remember what site
They need be a 360 degree feston bulb I think 41mm

Flasher/ Enduro socket mod for 1157 bulb

Will post on enduro 1157 socket upgrade later today

Upgrade original enduro 1156 single bulb socket to accept a dual 1157 bulb for Brake/Tail/and Blinkers

Remove old contact and spring
the 2 locking pins on a 1156 bulb are parallel to each other
The 2 locking pins on a 1157 bulb are offset to each other
You will need to file off 1 on the locking pins on the 1157 bulb
then solder 2 wires to the bulb and insert a insulation washer as shown Then squeze the bulb socket a bit
The 1157 bulb will now fit well without the spring and have a secure connection

LED/incandescent flashers

The turn signal flasher that I use is rated for a combination of LED and incandescent bulbs. I have LED signals in the Oldtimer bags and incandescent 1156 bulbs in the front signals, which are aluminum Hella signals from a /5. Everything works.

LED's

Im so confused .........

Yesterday I received my super duper Enduro 1156 LED's in the mail. Today I installed them in my Saddle bags. To my surprise ... they work great as stop lights but they ALSO come on as running lights when I turn the headlight on. So they work for both and I never installed a resistor.

To be clear here..... the bike was not running. All I did was turn on the electrical system to check the lights.

Am I missing something here?

Tail/Brake Enduro side light and main tail light

It is because all your lights are getting full battery voltage with tail or brake light energized

You need to disconnect the tail light wire for the main tail light (led assy or standard 1157 tail light bulb) and connect the resistor to that wire( already connected to the plate light) and also the other side of the resistor to the signal wire on the brake side of the main tail light
This will give all bulbs about 4 volt when tail is turned on and full voltage when brake is depressed

Its ok to call me anytime

Ok ....... Once again Im not sure what's happening but I took the /2 out and I still have running AND brake lights. All I did was add the LED's to my Enduro's. There must be some kind of bridge in the wiring that makes it all work.

Not only do the running lights come on but the brake lights are BRIGHT !!! Im very happy with the way it is working.

I did notice however ..... when kick starting the bike (with the running and brake lights off) the lights do come on just enough to see them. Once the bikes starts they turned off. PFM.

When kicking the bike over, the running and brake lights come on when they're switched off? Did I get that right? How could that be normal? What am I missing here?

Hey Tommy
Sorry for the delay. Im a pilot and Im on a trip. Im available after 5pm tomorrow and can call then.

I went for a longer ride yesterday. The rider behind me said everything worked normal. Running and brakes lights on the Enduro bags. No resistor.

Jon.....
Yes. Of course I didn't see it but my buddy standing behind the bike (while I was kicking it over) said the lights came on briefly when I kicked the bike over. He did not specify which lights came on. I will try to get that information. I can't explain it either.

Waiting to here from Skychs
I wanted him to verifiy his led taillight assy ( I think he has a led board instead of a bulb like ours)
and see if he has a diagram and take a few readings and then will post a response

Led taillight

Thanks for some great shots of your rear tailight bulb
#3 pic shows all lights are on but brake light is dim because you must have taken the pic with just the tailight on
That is good for me to understand you rear tailight bulb

If you could please take a voltmeter reading for me
Looks like the 2 terminals next to each other top is ground and one with the green wire also attached is you tail light feed
The terminal by itself should be your brake light feed

ground your voltmeter
with tail light on your tail light feed should be 6 volts
and then measure your brake light feed (without your brake light on) and my quess it will be lower than 6 volts maybe 4 volts
This will confirm that the bulb you are using already has a resistor built into its design

Tommy

LED's

You are correct ...........

My battery is a little low because of all the playing with the electrical system so ...... the voltage checked out just below 6 and 4. I will trickle charge it over night and check it again in the morning just to make sure. Hopefully all the black dots (in my eyes) from the bright LEDs will be gone by then. Smile

I bought the LEDs from CLASSIC DYNAMO & REGULATOR CONVERSIONS LTD about a year ago. I have been very happy with everything I have installed.

The only bulb I have not been able to find is the license plate/parking bulb in the rear tail light. You can see from the photos that it's still a regular bulb. If anyone has a link for that bulb it would complete my /2 to LEDs.

Problem solved. Smile
