Any one did this before?
Where can I find parts?
Anything I should pay attention to?
My tacho is working but is also heavily stuttering/hopping, so could also be the gear drive from the hub or the cable.
Thanks.

Speedometer. Is it possible

Speedometer.
Is it possible to replace the worn parts myself or does it have to go trough some calibration afterwards?

R51/3 speedo

There is no way of telling what the problem is until you open it up. I would not run the speedo until you have sorted the problem or you could damage what is a rare part. If you are not happy with tackling the overhaul take it to an instrument technician but it is certainly not rocket science. It could also be a faulty speedo cable.
The only way to calibrate the speedo is to change the spring length . If you look at the spring the non moving end is help in place by a tiny tapered pin . Pull the pin out adjust the spring length . Tap the pin back and run the speedo without the decal and with a pencil mark at 40 MPH say . Run the bike from one mile stone to the next and use a stopwatch to calculate your actual speed etc.

A question for the Fudisa ( Zulu for a person who knows everything ). When fitting a new chrome ring which holds the glass in place how does one bend the ring around the lip of the speedo ? I would imagine this needs to be rolled , rather like spinning , all the way around. I have a new chrome ring which needs to be fitted to my speedo but I am nervous I will make hash of it.

Where does one get spare

Where does one get spare parts for something like this? BMW never sold individual parts for them. You might have to buy multiple basket cases in order to get one good set. Seems to me, the most cost effective thing to do is to have a professional rebuild it. They have the skill, parts, and can recrimp the bezel on the lens. There are rebuild places in the US as well as Europe.

Fitting the chrome bezel

If you do a goggle search you will fine YouTube videos of how the chrome ring is replaced using a lathe. it is easier to watch them than to try to explain it. But it dose require some custom made fixtures that can vary with the different speedometers. And sometimes the body is held in the chuck. They are all different but the method is the same.

Speedometer

I have this same model of speedometer on my 1952 R67/2. It's made by SWF. Those are the initials inside the diamond shape at the top.
My speedometer looked good but had been sitting for over forty years. I sent it to North Hollywood Speedometer for service. I've now put over a thousand miles on the bike and it works perfect. Michael
