Has anyone replaced the steering stem on an Earls fork? It doesn't appear to press out like most bikes and may be brazed around the bearing mount area.

I would not go that route,

I would not go that route, but instead purchase a known good unit and paint it to match your bike. That is, unless someone can post a good frame guy who can do this. Best of luck and do find a solution that keeps you safe!

Item 14 it is. Since it has a number assigned to it [14],does that indicate it was a replaceable item?

Not necessarily. The online

Not necessarily. The online diagrams are universal and might apply to other models. If there's nothing listed in the table I've found that it means that it is either no longer available or wasn't a valid separate part for that model.

If I'm not mistaken, those items were removable on the /5-on models. I haven't read the Barrington book enough to know if it's discussed there. Of course, a quick call to Vech would figure it out.

I need to check my 55-69

I need to check my 55-69 parts book and see if the stem is a numbered item on the diagram and has a part #.
Yes, the bottom triple clamp on the telescopic forks has a stem that can be removed.....Maybe your not supposed to ,
but i'd bet its been done a few times. I've machined and replaced stems on about a dozen bikes [not any BMW's]for myself and others, with out any problems. However in today's litigious society I would probably take a giant step backwards and be very selective who I did it for.
