I had installed my bolt and castle nut that holds the bell crank with the castle nut facing the fender, and the bolt driven in from the right side of the frame as per this pre-teardown picture shows. Made sense to me, and the restoration pics I see show it the same way, as does the parts book.

Just want to confirm after reading the section on mistakes on assembly here (Snafu - Marco). Should I be assembling with the castle nut on the outside (right side) of the bike? Thanks!

Well, That's Always Been

That's always been a good question. I know the parts manual shows it inward, but most guys put it the other way. You can get it off without messing with the fender that way.

Thinking on this I believe I

Thinking on this I believe I will put the castle nut on the outside. If I ever need to pull the bell crank getting the cotter pin off is easier, and having the bolt act as a stud that essentially stays in place is helpful as well.
