Thought I would put this on this forum because most of the Steib sidecars are attached to these bikes.
I have an S500L Steib sidecar. The ID tags says 1951, I was told many years ago that the L suffix indicated
Luxus in German. My understanding is the S500L has a trunk. Now it gets a little fuzzy, I was also told that
the S500 has the same round shape in the front with the sloped bobtail style rear with no trunk. The rear portion
looks the same as an S350. Now, it seems to me that Steib changed the S350 from flat body panels to round(like the S500) at some point in production. The S350 has a very distinct eight sided flat panels. Any experts out there on Steibs with some old tribal knowledge that can answer this for me ? Thanks, Michael

You might have a mis-badged

You might have a mis-badged S350. The original 1951 S350 is an odd duck. As you didn't post a photo, I can only go on your description; here goes:

'51 is the cut-off between the prewar pattern version sold after the war and the '52 onwards production we're all used to. The '51 is a one-year only model that's basically a prewar NR28. '52 is the first introduction of the pretty deco fender and the cobra handle light-and even so, it was only offered on the S500 for the first few years. A stock '51 should have an unvalanced prewar fender, small marker light and a grab handle.

There was never an opening trunk ; access was from behind the seat. There's a lock insert on the side to prevent the removal of the seat, and it's the same lock that's used to lock the handlebars.

And sorry, it originally came with flat panels.

If you can post any pictures here, or can send me a pic to my email, I can tell you with more certainty.

S500

After looking closer I realize the bike is a 1951 and the sidecar is a 1953. It looks like the page inside the tub reads S500 09261
The sidecar has the full fender and cobra light. Thanks for your help, Michael
