Hi folks, first post, have really enjoyed looking around your forum, nice job!

I am in the process of trying to help organize, clean and "deal with" some family storage that has gotten out of hand...father is a bit of a hoarder. Just FYI, not ready to sell anything at this point.

Have looked and studied on this subject and am getting conflicting info/photos so thought I would try to see if anyone can nail down an answer.

On the post war bell style front fenders for the r51/2, r51/3, can anyone tell me the differences in the fenders for those models? The fender I'm trying to confirm identity of has a rear strap that is OVER the top of the fender, not hidden under. The biggest feature that is confusing me is that the strap on mine is two pieces, riveted to each side with a space of several inches between. Most of the straps on these fenders I see are all one piece with no space, whether 51/2 or 51/3.

Bottom line, can anyone confirm the correct model bike for this bell fender with a two piece strap?

I apologize for lack of photos, I do not have that ability at this point.

Thank You! for any assistance.

No, it is the "full" bell

No, it is the "full" bell version as used on the r51 style bikes. Thanks for your input.

I'm 99% sure this is for a twin, with the full, larger bell section.

Ran across this sale that is the style of fender I have.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/BMW-R51-2-Front-Fender/253244044572?hash=item3a...

As you can see, the main strap/stay is two pieces riveted to each side. Most of the 51/2 restorations I see have a near exact fender but the strap is one piece wrapped over the top with no space between.

Is the 51/3 a one piece strap and 51/2 a two piece? Are people just intermixing these fenders because of availability and most not knowing the difference? Lots of conflicting info/photos out there.

Thanks again guys, really appreciate any help.

Front Fender

Checked my front fender on a 1954 R51/3, the rear stay is a one piece riveted to fender. What about your front stay, does it run under or above the fender. I believe if under the fender it's for the R51/2. The two piece rear stay seems odd!

Yes, odd, and your questions

Yes, odd, and your questions are the reason I made this thread. My fender "looks" exactly as yours with 3" of the stay removed on top making it two pieces, exactly as the eBay fender I posted. It appears factory and I have seen more than one other leading me to believe it is. If I'm understanding your question correctly, the front stay is removable and is not on my fender, I have only holes there. My fender came with a 51/2 project and is not mounted.

Seems to be a mystery for everyone as I've seen restorations with both types and I assume one type is wrong.

Thanks for your effort.

OK, I realized I was just mistaken there, been looking at too many motorcycle parts.

My fender front stay is NOT removable and is riveted UNDER the fender as, it seems, to be on a 51/2.

So, seems correct in the details for the 51/2 other than figuring why the two piece "main" or center stay.
