Happy to report that I finally have a pretty sweet riding 1954 R51/3. It was manufactured in July of 1954 and arrived in NY in September the same year.

I've located the bike in 2012 sitting in a backyard rusting away.

It was a perfect candidate for a total restoration. Nothing was left untouched mechanically. Started with a crank rebuild, replacement of all bearings in the engine, transmission and rear drive. Cylinders were bored to 1st over, new pistons, right cylinder oil passage upgrade, cyl heads complete rebuilt with new guides and valves, powerdynamo 12v. Carburetors got new slides, needles and jets. New SS rims, spokes, front fork tubes re-chromed, complete exhaust system, new seat etc.....

The frame has been stripped and repainted. Sheet metal is original except the front fender. Working on locating better front and back fenders.

I've run into a couple of hiccups with the rear suspension and carburetors but all is well now. Suspension prob was addressed with the spring upgrade on the grease bottom caps. New slides and needles in the carbys solved that issue.

Bike starts right up and drives like a new bike. Many thanks to several members here for their input over the years answering my questions. Kurt is one of them Smile

Roger that !

The last three is the current version of the bike. Tank and rear fender is from the original bike and whatever paint was hiding under the blue re-spray.

540xxx for both frame and engine.

So was the 540xxx bike the one that was built in July 1954? I was thinking about updating my registry for bikes and build dates...can find that by typing in the VIN in the fields on the left side of the screen.
