Hi,

I am in the process of assembling a 1965 R50 /2 (purchased in boxes) now that I have most everything restored. One snag I am having difficulty with is getting the bolt holes on the fender mounted luggage rack to align with the fender and rear shock tower holes. When the fender holes are low the rack aligns well with the shock tower holes, and when the fender aligns with the shock tower holes the rack holes are high (because the rack sits on top of the fender).

Has anyone else encountered a difficult fitting luggage rack? Perhaps the rack I have is a cheap reproduction unit (it came with the bike and was aged with everything else). Hoping for any thoughts before I try buying a different luggage rack, or "make the rack holes larger".

Thanks!

Could it be just as simple as rotating the rack front to back? On my rack for my R69S, there are two vertical tabs for attaching to the fender. The longer of the two tabs is in the rear for my installation.

Thanks for your reply Kurt.

Thanks for your reply Kurt. I did look at it 180deg from how I have it now, but then the vertical support for the rack is well away (a couple inches front to back direction) from any mounting hole.

I appreciate your thought though. This bike is the only experience I have with vintage motorcycles so am trying to learn as much as I can from the various books, clubs, and pictures I can find.

Cool - looks like mine is a bit different as it does not have the three rivet fasteners on the side where the vertical support joins the rack platform itself. Not sure what mine is, but I may need to replace it.

Thanks for sharing your picture. Nice looking bike there!

Your rack is one of the early reproductions that came un-assembled. Purchaser was required to weld all the brackets on the rack. Yours was obviously welded up to fit some other motorcycle. Side brackets on the originals were riveted on. I suggest you slot the holes.

Thanks for the info comet. Glad there are folks around willing to share history like this bit. Slotted holes it is!
