I am sorry if I am crowding this forum with stupid questions, but I'm new to vintage BMW bikes.

What is the thing under the seat, in front of the battery, that has a round cap that flips up and appears to have an electrical connection at the bottom?

And...do R50/2 bikes have a light in the speedometer? I have no illumination and I'd hate to yank the speedo out only to find there's no light in there.

Everyone has been so helpful here, thanks in advance.

It is a service outlet for anything. Sidecar would normally have a separate harness for brake lights, turn signals, etc.
I see an emergency light in one of the older accessory catalogs that works with this outlet. I have the same one by and under the seat on my '95 K75 and also had one on my '96 r1100rt. Neither of those bikes tugged sidecars.

There should be at least two (2) tiny lamps inside your speedometer. At least they are on my '69. They are not very bright. Lots of folks change them to LED. Just open your bucket and you can pull them out of the speedo. You don't have to disassemble anything.
