Sitting idle since 1970
47 years
Stored always in shelter
Owner took it apart to restore some day
Always turned engine over several times a year to keep it free

Phase 1 is to get it running again

Good luck with your project

Hi,
Good luck with your project, I wonder if you could do me a favour?
I am collecting parts to resurrect an R67/2 which my Dad dismantled in the 1960s, he wanted the engine to give my Mums R51/3 sidecar outfit a boost, and much of the rest of it got given away over the years.
I have about 95% of the parts now, the engine is ready and some of the sub-assemblies, however I have no rims on my hubs and I need an offset figure for building them up, BMW published figures to use in conjunction with (and to make) the wheel gauges, but they only give a figure to the edge of the rim, which is no use unless you know exactly how wide the original rims were, what I need is a measurement from a good datum, such as across the edge of the brake drum, to the centreline of the rim. If you should happen to take one of your wheels out for any reason if you could take a measurement, that would be great.
Also, does your front wheel sit dead centre between the fork legs?, because some seem to be very slightly offset towards the brake plate side, approx 0.5mm.
Thanks a lot.

original color

No
A previous owner painted the headlight ,gas tank and fenders blue
I sort of like it and will drive it as is for now

Installing a leaking rear main seal today
Engine hopefully tomorrow

Will post more pic's as I go

I paid $500.00 for the bike
Was missing one rim and exhaust headers and mufflers

Already received a set of headers and mufflers from Antero from Mi
And a new rim from Jim in Ky
Thank you both

Tommy

new bike

Very nice. Are you putting it together just see what you have and then maybe, restoring it? Im not sure what its worth restored but the odd color concerns me. I wish I could find something like that.

R51/3

Just putting it back together for now to make it a runner
My short turn goal is to make run and evaluate the mechanics
And have Roger ( 2nd owner who bought the bike in California sometime in the mid 50's while in the Marines) rode it back home here in Ma. and with his brother Peter shared ownership for most of its life to once again let them ride it a few more times!!
Both now are in their 70's
I will also ride it as is this year
I know the blue tank and fenders are not the original color but that is another story and will stay the same for now
It is what it is and needs to be enjoyed as is
Oh yes this bike has patina and a great story

Phase 2

Bike is together and running

Was purchased by Roger from Irv Seavers dealership S Calif in1957 while in the USMC
He traded in his 1948 Harley pan head for 400 dollars and bought this 1954 R51/3 for 695 dollars and then rode it back to Ma. before going to Japan for his next duty

Phase 3
Engine is out to clean slingers

Great story

Looks like it's all there. Too bad the front fender is chopped. Seat will be easy to rectify.

Front fender

I do have a replacement front fender
It is primed and ready to be painted
But it doesn't match the blue so I used the chopped fender for now
Didn't want to add more patina as I think it has enough already

Dear Mr Byrnes,

Thank you for your email.

The BMW R 51/3 VIN 540420 was manufactured on July 09th, 1954 and delivered on November 08th, 1954 to the BMW importer Balcom Trading in Tokyo.

We hope this information is helpful for you.

Yours sincerely,

Julia Oberndörfer

--
BMW Groupm

Then ended up at Ivr Seaver in Ca and sold to Roger in 1957
He then rode it across the USA to New England
It was sold 2 more times and then to his younger brother Peter back in 1977
Peter took it apart to restore it someday

I bought the bike from Peter in June 2017 and now in the process of restoring it
Looks like this bike has almost been around the world
And soon to see many more miles!

Tommy

Stopped by Roger's house today to give some pic's and let him know that this bike was delivered to Japan on 11/54 (Almost 1955).
He bought it from Ive Seaver in 1957 in S. Ca.
We do not know what happened from the time it was delivered in Japan and who and how it ended up in S. Ca.

What we do know is that Roger bought the motorcycle from Irv Seaver in 1957

Roger shared this photo of his new r51/3 from the Marine Air Base in Santa Ana Ca. as the new and very proud owner, and also of him and his mother after he drove the bike home to Massachusetts before being employed to Japan !!

Very Cool!

11/54 - one month before I was born. And my '55 R69 was built when I was 4 months old. I just think it's the greatest thing to be able to work on, restore, and actually ride bikes from that era. Good for you!

Birth Bikes

Good for you
You must be 63 years old
I am 1 year older than the 54 r51/3 and 2 years older than my 55 r50
I now need a 1953 bmw to be the same age as me
Let me know if you find any
PS
Must be less than 600.00

Tommy

That's really cool having the

That's really cool having the early and present pictures.

I made my way 4 owners backwards (there have been Cool and that particular guy passed-on a month before I bought my r60/2.
I found the obituary on-line but never pursued contacting his widow. Felt kinda weird about it because there were some pictures of him riding the bike stuffed in the original owners manual.

Ironically he sold the /2 to concentrate on a Ural sidecar project (transplant BMW engine) and it turned out that folks I know from the Ural world knew and rode with him often.
