Hello All
I recently have acquired a 1958 BMW R69 serial # 653507. The bike seems to be a dover white but I do not know if this is original. It's a basket case that I might attempt to restore in the future.
Thanks for any info.
Christian

Contact BMW Classic in

Contact BMW Classic in Munich, they might be able to tell you what the original colour was.

Jeff Dean mentions on his website that Michael Bondy, of BMW importer Butler & Smith, "sent BMW a can of color paint, which was used on his 1942 Packard, and BMW duplicated it. He then ordered 50 motorcycles in that color" - Dover White (or Frost Beige according to GM). I'm not sure what year that was.

Prior to Dover White, BMW painted bikes in Federweiss (Feather White) which is also a beautiful colour, I personally prefer it to Dover White, less cream coloured. See the attached picture thanks to FD Classic Worx - the 3 fuel tanks are Alpine White, Feather White and Dover White.

I Would Be Interested

I would be extremely interested if you can confirm through your teardown/restoration process if the bike is an original Dover white bike. I painted my '59 Dover white, knowing it may not be correct. Tim Stafford says the earliest original Dover white bike he can confirm is a 1960. Surely someone knows what year Butler and Smith ordered their white ones? Just be nice to know, then I can say that Dover white was indeed at least offered in '59. Thanks!

Oh, if you get bored or tired of this project - let me know!

Dave

Thanks everyone, for the replies.
Frame and block numbers seem to indicate 1958, so probably not dover white then.
I have also been told that some bikes were white for the Red Cross, but I know nothing further. If the project proves too much for me I will post it in this site first.

The BMW Archives also show a few R 69 models in white, mainly police bikes. Many had full fairings, long before the R 100 RS in 1976.

Dover White

I have a '61 Dover White R69S, the 500th. S model, guaranteed original paint. I'd be very interested in knowing earlier examples of this color.

Douglass, please could you

Douglass, please could you post some photos of your original paint Dover White. I have attached some pictures of white R 69 S models presented at the IFMA in September 1960 (from "Wir von BMW" publication). There is a USA model as well as a European model with a standard tank. Unfortunately the pictures are in B&W, so one can't be certain of which white paint was used on these exhibition models.

Just got word from the archive that the bike was delivered to Butler and Smith as a original black bike. Mystery solved.

Taillight

I have a 1958 R69 built only a few days apart from yours. Specifically, mine is 653331 manufactured on 1/20/58 and delivered 1/31/58 to Butler & Smith. It's a bit odd that my serial number is lower that yours yet was manufactured four days after yours and delivered about 6 weeks earlier.

I'm hoping you can help me with a question. My taillight is the small one, and my understanding is they went to the large coffee can taillights sometime in 1958. One speculation is they may have had leftover inventory of the small lights that they used up on the early 58 builds. Does your R69 have the small taillight or the large one?

tail light

Mine has neither, I'm afraid. It's missing a few parts. The fender that came with it had no tail light and may not be the same year.
Sorry.

Thanks for your reply, Christian. Best of luck to you should you decide to go forward with a restoration. I've been having a lot of fun with mine.

Rondel

Somewhat off topic but still a color question. Is there a color match for the rondel blue?
