Having recently picked up a '71 R50/5, I'm brand new to vintage motorcycles and BMW's. Im looking to restore the bike to some degree and upon stripping the bike down I'm having trouble figuring out what a particular hacked off frame part might have been. I don't see it in most pictures and diagrams. Based on initial research, the bike has been modified to have the toaster tank as the '71 didn't come with one new, plus the rear frame has no frame tabs/holds for the chrome battery covers. The VIN plate, frame and engine show matching numbers 2902827

My question is what was originally in place where the part shown below has been sheared off? I found a picture online that may show what was once there but I can't identify what it might be. The right side of my frame is in the picture with a closer shot of the cut part afterwards. The third photo shows an example of what the part might be from the left side of the bike. I don't see this part on the MaxBMW frame diagram or the Clymer manual (p673).

Any guidance available is appreciated!

Looking at your third

Looking at your third picture, the bracket on the left downtube looks like the frame anchor for a hydraulic steering damper. Some later /5s had this bracket as well as the more common friction damper mount that is also visible.

Not sure on your cut off bracket. Later RS and RT models had horn mounts in a similar location.

Thanks, Mark. That makes

Thanks, Mark. That makes sense, as someone appears to have added a two stage horn with its own relay. Hopefully I can find a diagram or photo of what might have been there before refinishing the frame.
