I delivered parts for an auto parts store in 2014. I had seen this old BMW in a auto repair shop that I delivered parts to, for several months.
Asking about the bike one day, the owner of the shop said it belonged to an 80 yrs. old gentleman. His wife won't let him ride it anymore so maybe for sale "think he wants $6000". Tell him I will offer $2000. The heads are off, juggs are off, in a box. Pistons are hanging out of the case. Licence tag say 1991.
Went home to do some research on what the bike maybe worth. Don't know what year it is but has earles forks. Not knowing anything about the bike maybe $2000 was fair. He came back with $2500, I hemmed and hawed around for a while. Found out the bike was a 1969 R69S finley said, OK to the $2500. I asked about the 12000+ miles on the odometer. The old gentleman said it had 5000 miles when he got it. Been sitting for some 25 yrs. Its possible?
Retired from the Air Force in 1989 where I was a Heavy Equipment Mechanic for 20 yrs. You know working on, MB2 Aircraft tow tractors, Crash/Rescue Fire trucks. Where you had to use a 15000 lb forklift ( which I worked on also) to just remove the brake drums. So I would rebuild the bike myself. The forks were repainted, battery box was redone, wheels were painted, all the rubber was replaced.
Had to bore the cylinders & put new pistons in. That was why the cylinders were off. Juggs had gotten water in one from sitting outside.
I decided not to do a full restoration, just a nice clean up and rebuild the engine. All the bearings replaced wheels and engine bearings.
2.5 yrs and $2561 in parts plus a new Corbin seat, in the process of putting on new chrome wheels. I put almost 1000 miles on her this summer, changed the oil a couple times. Everything looks good from here.
