I purchased two new covers believing that they would match the chrome finish of the side panels on the tank. Upon seeing them they do not appear to be chromed, just a polished metal. There is a distinct difference between the chrome of the tank panels and these new battery covers. Is there any polish that you recommend that would give me a chrome like finish or am I going to need to have them plated? Thanks!

Hi

I'm no expert with chrome finishing. The only way i can see to match the chrome finish on the tank side panels to the new side covers is to take the tank and the side covers to a chrome finishing place so they can match the colour as such , prefer to go to bike Enthusiast shop. Well that's my 2 cents worth.

Most of the reproduction

Most of the reproduction covers that I have seen are actually polished stainless steel. Shiny, but distinctly more grey than chrome. Stainless covers can be chrome plated, but they do require an extra step to deal with the nickel content. That, and the surface must be flawless.

Thank you for your input - I guess I'll be looking for a local plating company.

Just a follow up here; I used

Just a follow up here; I used a buffing wheel on a bench grinder along with a stick of polishing paste and was able to attain a finish that is very close (close enough for me) to a chrome finish. And, thanks to a suggestion from a local body shop I then acquired some black pin stripe tape and trimmed it to fit into the indentations of the covers. From a few feet away you cannot tell that they were not painted. This may not be the way a purist would do it but for someone who has limited funds it works. I am very pleased with the results. The next project will be the speedometer.
