Hi,

I am restoring the engine on a 1938 R51. It has a unique detail on the clutch pressure plate. The center hole is not square like the /3 stuff is, and it came with a small bearing race that plugs into the hole in the plate - all this matches the parts book as well. Any ideas what is supposed to push on this bearing race?

Help. I will try to post pics if I can figure out how.

Jeff

clutch plate

These are pics of the clutch plate - the center hole is round to accept this little bearing surface - Any insight on what is supposed to interact with it?

R51 Clutch

Hi,

There are people on here better qualified than me to answer this, but this is my take.
I've rebuilt just three pre-war R51's. I got my latest one back on the road just last week. From my experience with those, and from double checking with the parts book, I'd say you've got a non-standard pressure plate there. I've never seen a clutch from a 51SS and maybe yours is one and they're different, but a standard plate has indentations on the back to hold the springs, doesn't have those six inner holes ( what are they for?) and has just the usual small hole in the centre for the clutch rod to sit in.

If I were you I'd look on p61 of the parts book and check that you've got the right part.

Pressure Plate & Bearing

I've been trying to remember what mine looked like without much success and my extra parts are not easily accessed right now. I probably have pix somewhere but can't find them either.

The R51-71 Ersatzteillistes I have are drawn illustrations and don't show things too clearly, but the R5-6 Ersatzteillistes are based on photos and are much clearer. The pressure plates shown there look like yours and the "pressure piece" that fits in the middle of it clearly has a square hole in it to receive the square end of the throw out rod. Assuming your pressure plate has spring recesses on the other side, it looks OK to me.

It looks to me like you have the wrong "pressure piece".

R51 Clutch

HI,

The August 1939 R51 parts manual shows (on page 5) the plate I have with 12 holes total - and item# 173 in the exploded view plugs into the center hole - it is part # 254 1 11 002 0 and is called "Druckstuck" roughly translated as bearing piece.

I have done some more research and see that the same parts show up in an R6 engine parts book - you can see this on beemergarage website at http://www.beemergarage.com/documents/R5616.pdf

This shows the same plate with a small round hole in the center and the druckstuck as well.

again, the transmission seems to show a rod with a square end.

Mystery remains - what parts interact with this little round plug?

R5 R6 clutch plate

HI,

The R5 and R6 plates look like this, but the holes in the center are larger than mine - they are on par with the other 12 holes, where mine is much smaller - the mystery remains....

Parts

Bruce,

Every indication that these parts are original to this machine. The plate and the flywheel and number matched stamped with a "63" close the edge.

They were together with all the other engine parts - and the center part was in the plate all the while.

plates

Hi,

Aha! Interesting - There appears to be a small ring around the square hole in the plate on the left. Is it possible that that part is pressed in as well? I'm starting to think that perhaps the hole in my plate was damaged at some time, and drilled out. I think I will Weld up the hole, and have my machine shop find true center and drill a pilot hole, then I can file the square back into the plate. That, or cut a larger round hole with a step, and press in a /3 era center piece.

Thanks for the pics - that helps alot!

Jeff
