Over 12 years ago I bought a 1956 model-1955 R50 from it's original owner. While the bike had been completely torn down for rebuilding the owner assured me the bike was all original. Two weeks ago an 'expert' told me the bike has incorrect wheels/rims/lacing and the mufflers were too long. While I'm inclined to believe the original owner the 'expert' has made several good arguments. Can anyone help me find out what is correct for this bike?

Ted -

Duane is usually a pretty good source. Here's a page on mufflers:

http://www.w6rec.com/duane/bmw/muffler/slash2_muffler/index.htm

Duane has a page on wheels/rims, but I don't see much on the specific about lacing:

You can also find the model on this page and get a sense of the "official" photo from BMW, although they are not necessarily the most accurate:

Kurt,

Duane's article clearly indicated my mufflers are correct. Thank you. Now if I could find the same information on wheels.

Thanks again

Maybe he is referring to the

Maybe he is referring to the early single cross vs later double cross spokes?

Early R50

The 1st 2 years of R50 & R69 have alot of unique features - Headlight ears, shock tins, spoke pattern, hubs, rims, rear brake linkage, taillight, license plate bracket, air cleaner, plating etc... too many to go into in detail here - contact me if you want to discuss.

1X vs 2X wheels for 1956 R69

Does anyone know what year and month they switched from 1X to 2X spoked wheels? I have a 1956 R69 that was manufactured on April 16th, 1956 and delivered to Butler and Smith in New York on July 24th, 1956. 2X chromed steel wheels were put on it in 1968 by the previous owner.
Dave.

Wheels

Hi Dave, my R69 was built in May 1956 and is unrestored and original. It has alloy rims. If you give me your email, I could forward some images

hubs

Hi,

The hubs in the pictures are 1955-56 1x type.

R50 & R69 are the only bikes that had these, and only 1955 and early 1956.

I have a book at home that tells at what serial number the new 2x hubs began.

Weinmann 18 inch low lip aluminum rims for 1956 R69 40 spoke

Looking for a pair that are not cracked, bent, or pitted and will polish up nicely. Thanks, Dave.
