Hi all,

I am trying to pin down what the correct coating for R5 & R51 cylinder barrels is for units after serial #8500. The books I see show a silvery color, and I have been told Cadmium Plating by some, and perhaps Zinc plating by others?

Does anyone have more info on this?

Jeff

cylinder plating

I didn't see any sign of plating or paint on my cylinders.

cylinder plating

I know this doesn't answer your question; but, The cylinders on my 38 R66 have some kind of silver colored plating that looks like it may be dull nickel. It has chipped off on the edge of some of the fins and it is very thick, maybe .010" or more. Being that thick, I would guess one of the processes you mentioned.

Plated cylinders?

There was a post here a few years ago about early R66 cylinders being nickel plated which was the first I had heard of plated BMW barrels. I have 5 or 6 R5/R51 cylinders and I don't recall seeing any signs of plating (although I have never looked for it, either). I'll take another look at them the next time I am in my parts cabinet.

plating

What I am hearing is that the R66 had either Cadmium or Zinc plating on its unique barrels. I have not found any evidence that the R5 R51 barrels were anything but black painted. Thanks all!
