Hi,

Geez - I see the holes in the front of the block at the oil pan...Ouch.

Be sure to say if you need any parts, I have many spares for this type engine if you are in need.

The picture shows a stamped

The picture shows a stamped ring with a bump at each quadrant. It goes between the rear main bearing and the slinger. I presume that it acts as a spacer to allow more oil to flow through the bearing and into the slinger.

Man, those are ugly slingers!

Man, those are ugly slingers! But I agree that there's no evidence of that spacer ring. In the postwar twins, there's a hard, chamfered ring that fits against the slinger over the angled part on the inner diameter. The other side comes up against the main bearing inner race, to position it. There's a thinner one at the back and a thicker one at the front. With nothing in there, the bearing could move under pressure, which would wear on the crank surface.

I'm also surprised that the crank ends look like they are straight, rather than tapered. I've never been inside one of these two cam engines, but the cranks from earlier and later bikes I've handled all have a taper to mate to the flywheel. The taper joint, when designed right, is very strong. The key that fits in the crank is just to align the flywheel so that the timing marks on it are right. A key by itself will not hold the flywheel from spinning on the crank.

Taper

The Crank ends are tapered just like the later stuff - it's a trick of the camera angle.

Cool, and the taper looks

Cool, and the taper looks good. But before you reuse the slinger, check it very carefully around the screw holes to make sure that the metal hasn't fatigued and begun to crack.
