I'm just about to start work restoring a very original 1939 R51. Whilst everything that is there is original, both mudguards and the rack are missing. Over the years I've bought several such bits of tinware from various dealers but I've never yet been really happy with what I've received. Can anyone recommend a dealer who can supply mudguards which both fit AND look like the originals?
Many thanks,
Geoff.

As you discovered, the

As you discovered, the Eastern European products are less than ideal.

Hans Keckheisen is the fellow that did the metal work on the R7 restoration project for BMW and does beautiful, but very expensive work.

I have not found anyone doing work in the middle ground between Eastern Europe and Hans Keckeisen.

R51

Thanks Bruce. I'll give Hans a call next week when I'm back from holiday. Have you any experience with Dreher? His rack is over 900 euros, so much more expensive than most and therefore theoretically better. Usually you get what you pay for in life, but just occasionally you get stung. What makes me suspicious about Dreher are things like his R12 speedo. Twice the price of the usual Polish or rebadged Chinese rubbish - but people I've come to trust tell me that his speedos are, in fact, just Polish ones with a huge mark up!

In the past I have seen

In the past I have seen Dreher selling what I believe were Keckheisen'$ exhaust$ at Veterama, so the rack could be his. Definitely worth a query. Better yet, Veterama is coming up in a few weeks check it out in person. It makes or a great holiday.
