I am in the process of rebuilding my 29 R63 for the Motorcycle Cannonball run. I have the rear drive out and am looking at the ring and pinion gear. The ring gear has 53 teeth and the pinion gear has 13 teeth. The rear drive is marked with a 13 and a S (for solo?). What I am curious about is the repro gear sets all appear to have a 57 tooth ring gear. Any ideas here?

Erik, Could you possibly have

Erik, Could you possibly have a non original gear set in the bike? It may have been a modified set made to fit at sometime. Can you post some photo’s, it may help.

From the info I have and supported by a parts book, the R62/3 would have 14/57 solo and 12/57 sidecar gearing. The 500cc bikes could have 13/57 and 10/57 respectively. As you say new parts are readily available in these gear ratios.

My R62 would pull higher than 14/57 gearing happily, it devours hills easily. Personally I wouldn’t gear any lower as yours with more power will be even more capable.

Hi Peter,This is Erik out of

Hi Peter,

This is Erik out of Huntsville. The gearset was actually in the rear drive of the bike when I got it. I have ridden it around and it does fine. The ratio has thrown me off.

Attached are a couple of photos.

Hi Peter, Nothing is wrong -

Hi Peter,

Nothing is wrong - Just rebuilding the bike for the 2014 Cannonball run. When I got into the drive, the ratio was not what I expected. I am trying to figure out the source of this gearing. At this time, I expect to run it as is.
