What was this used for? A pump? A boat? Somewhere I have a photo I took in Toledo, Spain of a Harley that had been converted to a grist mill.

I think...

...that drivetrain is a fascinating example of eastern european effort to keep a motor usable: outstanding machining skills with absolutely no access to replacement parts! The gearbox, Amal Fischer carbs, timing chest cover, early type R5 type cylinders, final drive and rear half of the driveshaft are originals to the motorcycle, as is the remains of the mainframe mounted on the final drive...but the front portion of the driveshaft and "swing arm" copy frame is homemade. The header pipe flange fittings are well machined, but totally homemade by someone who didn't even have assess to pictures of the original? Looks like the product of a very skilled machinist living on Mars! I'd guess that was used in a homemade motorcycle? I think the heads may be from an R51, but maybe someone else will chime in?

Your motor...

...was made in mid to late May 1936. BMW in Munich will tell you the exact date of production, and where it was initially sold or shipped. Generally, R5 in CZ came with the army, or perhaps from the Sudetenland? BMW will be very interested in hearing from you, I think?...
