A friend of mine has , what he has called an R11.
It has a pressed steel frame and appears to be an R11 but the puzzling thing about the bike is the engine number which is 75985.
This seems to indicate the casings are from an R63 or an R16. But these are overhead valves and his bike is clearly a side valve.
I know the R61 had the same casing for the side valve R61 and the R66 overhead valve.
Is it possible this is a R16 with R11 barrels and heads ?

It is possible to use the same engine case for either SV or OHV so conversion could have been either way. If the original front plate is still there and the numbers visible it should be obvious which way. If not, maybe find the frame number and try emailing BMW archives, though I’m not sure if they have any records for these.

Mystery bike

Thanks Ian.
The bike has been made up from bits . The frame is R11/16 but much earlier than the engine . Other parts like carbs , horn and most small items are obviously incorrect. The owner is happy with his bike , which I suppose is all that matters.
All the best
